"Seretse Khama 1921- 1980 " A Biography of the late president of Botswana by Neil Parson Willie Henderson and Thomas Tlou Published by Macmillan ISBN 99912 60 315

This book opened my eyes to a side of Southern African politics that I had not considered. I read this book closely after " The long walk to freedom". This pair of books changed my view of southern African politics substantially.

Seretse Khama was born to rule a traditional kingdom within the British colonial territory known as Bechuanaland Protectorate ( know called Botswana ) Seretse Khama was proclaimed the rightfull ruler of Botswana at the age of four when his father died.

Seretse became engaged to Ruth Williams in 19 48. This led to his disinheritance. This cross cultural marriage was such an affront that he was denied the right to live in his own country and was exiled to live in Britain. They where only permitted to return to Botswana in 1956.

Khama and the new state of Botswana surprised the world in many ways. Botswan is know known as a model of 'non-racial democracy'. Botswana also achieved amazing economic growth.

After Seretse Khama's death his widow continued to live in Botswana until she passes away.
