Janet no longer coming to South Africa !

The Nelson Mandela SOS concert to raise funds to fight HIV/Aids was cancelled on Friday night - to the shock of international artists and disappointment of fans.

The extravaganza was to have been held on February 2 on Robben Island for 2 000 invited guests from around the world and 1 000 local fans.

The Nelson Mandela Foundation said on Friday that the agreement between the proposed producers and the foundation was not satisfactory.

Artists were devastated by the cancellation

Conditions in terms of sponsorship and television rights were not met, said former president Nelson Mandela's spokesperson Zelda Le Grange on Friday night.

"We could have gone ahead with the concert but the image of Nelson Mandela is at stake. If you do something you must do it properly or don't do it at all," Le Grange said.

But all is not lost. Le Grange said "we will regroup in the next few months" to discuss an event of a similar nature.

Artists such as Coldplay, Ludacris, Jimmy Cliff, Queen, Sting, Elton John, Bob Dylan, Michael and Janet Jackson and Deborah Cox would have been joined by Bono, Macy Gray, Eve, Nelly Furtado, Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics and Shaggy.

African stars Baaba Maal, Angelique Kidjo, Johnny Clegg, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Bongo Maffin and Vusi Mahlasela also would have performed at the show on the island where Madiba was jailed for 18 years.

'I'm not sure why the concert was cancelled'

Chief executive officer of Education Powers Our Planet, Dave Clark, the organisation responsible for bringing the international artists to the concert, said artists were devastated by the cancellation.

"We've just heard. This was an amazing project to be working on and the artists were all thrilled to be participating. We are just really sad," he said.

Clark said no reason had been given as yet, but he suspected that the foundation feared being unprepared.

"It seems like the funding for the concert won't fully be in place for the date provided."

Many of the stars would have performed within the walls of the jail on the island, but the "People's concert" would have been held concurrently at Green Point Stadium with artists being ferried between the island and the mainland by helicopter.

International guests were to pay $2 000 (R17 500) for a spot at of the biggest charity events to fight the HIV/Aids pandemic. Locals would have paid from R60 to R300 to see the show live at Green Point Stadium.

Roddy Quin, the managing director of Real Concerts which co-ordinated the building of the stage, accommodation, security and the logistics, said they were disappointed.

"All the logistics were in place. Everyone who was on the ground worked hard. We were 100 percent ready to go. I'm not sure why the concert was cancelled," he said.

All proceeds from the globally televised concert would have gone to the foundation, the United Nations' UNAids and the Robben Island Museum.

Janet invited to perform in South Africa !

CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP) - Former South African President Nelson Mandela announced that he'll host a concert featuring some of the world's leading entertainers to raise funds for Africa's millions of AIDS (news - web sites) victims.

U2 star Bono, Macy Gray and Shaggy had already agreed to perform at the Feb. 2 show, to be held on Robben Island, a rocky outcrop off the coast of Cape Town where Mandela spent nearly two decades as a prisoner of the apartheid regime and is now a museum.

Michael Jackson (news), Sting, Bruce Springsteen (news), Bob Dylan (news), Elton John (news) and Janet Jackson (news) have also been approached to play at the event — "Mandela SOS" — for an audience of 3,000 invited guests.

Mandela, 84, one of the world's most revered figures, emerged from prison to become South Africa's first democratic president in 1994. He stepped down in 1999 and has since become a vocal activist in the fight against AIDS.

"The concert will focus on the growing impact that AIDS has on human life, not only in South Africa but throughout the world," Mandela said.

"We must never allow those who are infected and affected by AIDS to become statistics."

Plans for the concert were announced Friday at a banquet staged in a marquee in a botanical garden on the slopes of Cape Town's flat-topped Table Mountain.

Guests included talk-show host Oprah Winfrey (news), Nobel Peace laureate Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Renzo Rosso, president of the Diesel clothing company and one of the event's main sponsors.

"I am certain we will overcome this epidemic," said Tutu, who was also a leading anti-apartheid activist. We overcame apartheid, we will overcome AIDS."

An estimated 4.7 million South Africans — one in nine — are HIV (news - web sites) positive, more than in any other country in the world.

Winfrey, who publishes a version of her magazine, O, in South Africa, said it was her aim to humanize the AIDS epidemic.

"It is my goal and the goal of `The Oprah Winfrey Show (news - Y! TV)' to take the story of AIDS and this pandemic back to the world and use my show to overcome and heal," she said.

Businessman Richard Branson and supermodel Naomi Campbell added their support to the initiative by satellite messages.

"AIDS has currently eliminated 25 million lives and is spreading fast," said Branson. "Something must be done to stop this scourge."

Janet was last in South Africa in 1998 while performing on her Velvet Rope World Tour !

30 August 2002 :

From Entertainment Weekly :

The one untarnished star of the Jackson clan took four years between albums last time. But it looks as if fans won't have to wait nearly as long for Janet Jackson's next pop/R&B opus. Six months after wrapping her tour behind 2001's ''All For You,'' Janet is at work on her next studio album; she hopes to release it early in 2003, according to her longtime collaborator Jimmy Jam, who's once again co-producing with partner Terry Lewis.

''Janet was itching to get back in the studio,'' Jam says. ''We talked about a million different possible things to do and finally decided to do a brand-new album.'' Jackson has already begun recording two songs, both of which are in the vein of her 1993 smash ''That's The Way Love Goes'' -- which Jam cites as his favorite Janet song ever. ''It's sensual, mid-tempo, and it has a little bit of a jazzy vibe,'' Jam says of the new material, while adding that other songs may go in entirely different directions. (Jackson's publicist at Virgin Records didn't return calls.)

It's still unclear if the still-untitled new album will continue ''All For You'''s fun-loving, sexually explicit themes. On that album's title song, Jackson sang that she hoped to ''ride'' a clubgoer's ''nice package,'' and she got even raunchier on other tracks. ''The 'All For You' album was very refreshing record,'' Jam says. ''It was at a point in Janet's life where she was getting out of a divorce but felt, I'm gonna be okay, I'm gonna live my life. Lyrically, the new album's going to be whatever's going on in her life right now.''

One possible guest-star on the new CD is none other than Jackson's pal (and rumored more-than-pal) Justin Timberlake, Jam says, while cautioning that no definite plans are in place. ''We love Justin,'' says Jam, who, along with Lewis, had talked to Timberlake about working on his upcoming solo album (in the end, they didn't participate). By the way, despite knowing both Janet and Justin, Jam denies playing matchmaker. ''Nah, they already knew each other,'' he says, laughing. Just don't tell Britney.

A sun-drenched tropical beach. Beautiful people sipping cold drinks and bronzing themselves everywhere as the sound of a hot, new Neptunes track wafts through the summer air. What could be better? How about a bikini-clad Janet Jackson stretched out on a beach-towel, singing the hook to your latest hit single. No, reggae don Beenie Man isn’t dreaming. He’s on the set of his new video for "Feel It Boy," the highly-anticipated first single from his forthcoming Virgin Records release, Tropical Storm.

The Grammy-winning team of Beenie Man and Janet Jackson recently finished filming the video for "Feel It Boy" with visionary director Dave Meyers (Britney Spears, Ja Rule, etc.) behind the lens. Shot on-location in Malibu, the video’s beach setting and party vibe are the perfect compliment to the sunny, upbeat track from the hitmaking duo The Neptunes and an airy, irresistible hook from Janet.

Amidst a sea of sunbathers gathered on an impossibly beautiful beach, Beenie and Janet turn up the temperature, their sparkling performances matching Meyers’ colorful, visually stunning images. With the "Feel It Boy" video set to premier at the end of July, the single already blazing the airwaves nationwide, and Tropical Storm dropping on August 20th, the king of dancehall is bringing the heat this summer. Already an international star, Beenie Man is poised to take his career to the next level.
