MINUTES OF THE 2005 AGMThe minutes of the Annual General Meeting held at Aeolians Yacht Club on the 19th of March 2005 were circulated. These were then proposed by Warwick Ham and seconded by Andrew Arthur.
TABLING OF NEW MATTERS
Mould for foils:
A mould has been built for a centreboard and rudder by Epsilon Engineering. Rudolph did encounter some problems with them at the 2005 worlds in Germany, but it was mentioned that Steve is using both a centreboard and a rudder without any difficulties.
Training manual:
Dirk Rother helped write or wrote the training manual which the German 505 Association uses. It was proposed by Warwick that the South African 505 Association buys a copy and uses it is future training programs. The proposal was seconded by Kyle Klaas.
I would like to thank you for the opportunity of serving you again for another year. It is my intention to grow the fleet as best can be done with the resources available to me, but firstly I must welcome the new members to the class and point out to you our webpage www.int505.org. From there you can access almost anything you want to know about 505 sailing any where in the world an d who does what. I would also like to point out that our local webpage (link) is sponsored by Rudolph Holm and our thanks goes out to him for his continued support.
The most important people are the official class measurers, Greame Willcox and Albrecht Holm. There approval has to be acquired for almost every piece of equipment on the boat. It is not there purpose to make life difficult for you, it is just to ensure compliance and both gentlemen are extremely helpful. The next person to know is the class secretary, Thomas Funke. Apart from co-coordinating NOR's and event compliance, he is also responsible for class rules and their compliance. He is taking over from Peter Roos who is now the international secretary. The afore mentioned are there to ensure the membership keep on the straight and narrow path. The man incharge of the funds is Rudolph Holm as treasurer and he will ensure w e are economically viable. These gentlemen are all volunteers and give of their own free time to the benefit of the class as a whole and I really do thank them and ask you to appreciate their commitment. All we ask is that you respect them for what they do for you and if you feel aggrieved towards any member of the exco please voice you opinion politely. Other members of the class admin are Steve Hegerstrom Natal rep, Hans Rogotski international liaison (shipping worlds etc.), Mark Biagio mail room, Warwick Ham Pretoria sailing club, and of course myself. I just worry about everything to do with growing the class. You must forgive us if we fall down on the job, sometimes its not deliberate, just human and life would be much easier if we where all full time officials.
I am back in action, but still have another year of studying in front of me which has proved problematic recently trying to balance every area of my life. It must be paradise to be a full time student and I'm sorry for not being able to complete all days of the events this last season due to exam pressures. Hopefully this will begin to ease by March next year. I am on worlds at present trying to find sponsors for the class and will try to arrange something soon for those able to go. I'm also starting to sort out the local calendar for next season. I have also been offered a boat recently 8481 1992, we are trying to clean her up a bit. Those interested can contact me.
I hope you have a pleasant season.
Tony Murray
SECRETARY’S REPORTI would like to use this opportunity to thank the members of the 505 Class Association for voting me in as the new class secretary. I am looking forward to working with the class and I hope that we can restore that class to its previous glory and hopefully have 20 boats actively racing on the water in the years to come.
Rule changes:
The 2005 worlds saw some debate surrounding the length of the centreboard below the hull of the 505 racing dinghy. The main parties involved in this argument were the German and the American sailors. By the end of the AGM a vote was required to settle the matter. A rule was then enforced limiting the length of the centreboard, protruding from the hull, to 1,450 meters.
Recent investigations by ISAF on the harness system which is currently used by the most two man trapeze dinghies have led to no change in the system as there was not enough evidence that this system was a cause for concern. The system does therefore still remain in use.
Rudolph Holm was unable to attend the meeting but sent the financial statements along with Tony. Rudolph made number of suggestions in his report. These are discussed below.
Weighing fees:
It was proposed that the class charges a weighing fee of R50/60 per weighing session for a class member and a fee of R100 per weighing session if the scale is to be used by a non class member. If there are any inconvenience costs involved then those will be added to the weighing fee. The proposal was made by Warwick and seconded by Albrecht.
Class fees:
Suggestion was made by the treasurer that the class fees be increased from the current R 90 per person to R 150 per person as from next year. The reason for this is that the fees have been at R 90 per person since 2000 and that there is not a lot of money left for the class after the international class membership fee of £5 has been paid. It was then suggested that there be a junior and a normal fee. The junior fee of R90 is applicable to all individuals under the age of 21 whilst all other members are obliged to pay the new fee of R150. The junior fee was proposed by Warwick and seconded by Albrecht. There were 8 members who voted in favour of the increase in subs and thus it was accepted.
Moving of the account:
The treasurer further suggested that the account, which is currently being managed by SAS be moved to another bank and be managed by the class itself. He suggested this as it is becoming extremely tiresome to manage the account through SAS. The vote on the movement of the account to another private account was accepted unanimously.
Further discussions on financial matters:
Steve asked the questions as to why there is so much money in the 505 bank account and what the class plans on doing with it. He further suggested that the class do something with the money so that it, being the class, can grow. He said that there were a number of people in Kwazulu Natal who were looking for boats but there are none for sale.
Tony pointed out that last year there was talk of Team Shosholoza acquiring a mould and starting production, but as of yet nothing has come of it. Tony further discussed that he had recently got his hands on a boat from Zimbabwe but it seems to be in a bad condition. It was concluded that the cost to import new boats is high but it needs to be done somehow. The idea of building new boats was raised but it seems that there is a general consensus that this will be an expensive learning curve and that, in the end, a locally built boat might not be any better or cheaper than one that is imported. Warwick gave a report on the international second hand boat market and mentioned that there was a boat with the number 8806 for sale for around R95 000. It was voted (8 votes for and 3 opposed) that the class association use the available funds, if possible, to purchase boats and to resell them to competitors. By doing this the class will be able to get new boats, which might have otherwise been lost, into the local sailing scene.
Another suggestion was made that the class keep the funds liquid and attempt to host another world championships in South Africa. The next possible date would then be in the region of 2010 to 2012. This was voted for and there were 4 in favour of the argument and 8 opposed it.
The office bearers for the new season are:
President: Tony Murray
Treasurer: Rudolph Holm
Secretary: Thomas Funke
Junior Representative: Bronwyn Klaas
Hayling Island, Great Britain in August 2006
Adelaide, Australia in February 2007
Due to the possible attendance at the worlds in Australia, it was decided that the nationals be held in September 2007. Exact dates are not yet known. 2007 will possibly see a short calendar with only the main events featuring.
