Mystical Miles: Running Living Beaming is a marvellous book about the deeper experiences life has to offer. And sure, it's about running, about the fullness of what it is like to run. Not quite a training guide though with lots practical tips, it goes further and through running explores the shimmering brilliance of life

Training for Comrades

Getting the Most out of Comrades

Mystical Miles : The book!

One Page Guide

The bottom line:

z       Train properly

z       Engage your mind

z       Absorb the spirit of Comrades

 Each of these is simple:

z       Training

o         Plan then do your weekly training

o         Build your weekly mileage, then taper

o         Track the impact of what your are doing and adjust

z       Merge your body and mind (they are one anyway so why try to split them)

o         Start this as soon as possible (your mind gets you through)

o         Engage it in training as well as in visualising what’s to come

o         Allow your awareness to influence your training

z       The spirit of Comrades is so much more than you

o         Read up about the event, its history and the characters that make up Comrades

o         Think about what it really means to you to do it

o         Understand what endurance training and running does for you

The Golden Rule: If you can’t do it, you can’t do it.

Text Box: The Golden Rule: If you can’t do it, you can’t do it.
The essence is to commit yourself to doing Comrades as soon as possible. Make it the focus of all your training. And run … yes … run. Get to running 5 days per week and 5-7 hours per week as soon as you can. Do it. Don’t talk about it. Get out the door on to the roads and trails; with the friends, the weather and the birds. And don’t fuss.

The golden rule means:

bulletIf you are too tired to do it (run) then you are – rest, revise the program
bulletIf you are injured, you are. Get it fixed
bulletIf you are hungry get your relationships sorted out, then if you are still hungry, you are. Find the right things to eat

The next rule: Train for what you are going to do on the day

It may seem funny, but you have to practice running the pace you will on the day. A Bill Rowan means averaging 6 min/km if you run all the way. If you walk some you will be running faster, say 5:30’s. Practice the pace. It’s no good doing all your long runs at 5 min/km then on race day trying to run 5:30’s. You will fall apart and end up disappointed. So if you are running a Two Oceans or a Bergville you have to run that at your race pace 6 min/km for a run Bill Rowan. If you can’t run 50 to 60 km at your race pace, you will struggle to run 90 km at that pace. Logical? Yes. Practiced by most? Judge for yourself.

Running logic is logical. Right. ;-)

There is another way, Run to make yourself strong. It works … but you have to know how to pace yourself. And if you do, you would get through in any case.
