1. Lydenburg: Helderwater (Nov
2000)
Location: Helderwater S25 05 58.5 E30 17 53.3, altitude +- 1900m above sea level, 18km east on the Roossenekal road from the Lydenburg turnoff.
Facilities: Self catering stone cabin with fire place overlooking stream and ponds, Two bedrooms sleep 4 + 2 on sleeper coach in living area. Complete kitchen(gas) and bathroom. Lights on battery, hot water from "donkie" which is fueled by the staff early morning and late afternoon. Firewood available.
Fly Fishing Notes: Five weirs, well stocked with rainbows from pan size to some trophy stuff. The water is well managed and the shores are reasonably clear for easy casting. This is a must for a tree catcher like me. The fish in the furthest weir are wilder and provided some some real aerobatic displays. a Sinking line is recommended for the first and the largest weir. I guess it is about 4-5m deep.
What to do and see: The scenery is breathtaking. Hiking and mountain biking to keep the unconverted busy. But sitting on the stoep early morning or late afternoon is on its own rewarding enough.
When to visit: All year round. My visit in Nov was wet and cool. A good excuse to lit the fireplace.
General Comment: In one morning I made 14 catches with the best catch a 2.2kg 50cm rainbow. a Peaceful and private hideaway. My Rating: 5
