PORTFOLIO

A note on my work:  As an art student, I tortured myself for not having ‘my own style’. It seemed very important to draw in one way and stick to it.  Later, when I lugged my portfolio around London, editors could not get a handle on what I did. I did everything - from cartoons torealism, then some more.  But they gave me work, and gradually came to terms with not knowing what to expect from me – other than my best in whatever I attempted.  Many years later, I am surprised when people say they can recognize my work; even children.   And so, at last, I have a style – ‘a Niki Daly non-style’.  Yet, while I have played with different styles of drawing, my materials have been rather consistent over the years – that is water colour and some form to drawing tools (pencil, pen and brush). Then a few years ago I started including digital art.  I’ll leave it to you to indentify which is which!

SKETCHBOOK

Note on my sketchbooks:  I’m at my most playful and inventive when I’m sketching, doodling, scribbling -playing in my sketchbook (with no other purpose than to amuse myself).  Some doodles may find their way into published work (developed and tarted up) but, mainly, my sketchbooks are unseen by my publishers. I regard them as private - keeping them away from praise or criticism.  On the other hand, I am all too happy to pour over the sketchbooks of fellow illustrators, and will often agree with them - that it’s their best work.  I feel that way about the drawings in my own sketchbooks (they are unspoiled!)
