The stud is situated in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa, on the coastal belt, in the proximity of Port Elizabeth. Port Elizabeth is a medium sized city and is home to two race courses. This area is also home to several studs, namely Ascot Stud where Al Mufti (Roberto x Lassie Dear) and Lecture (Seeking the Gold x Narrate) stand; Danika Stud, Villa Felice Stud, as well a several smaller farms. The studs in the area have been responsible for producing several top horses in the form of Enchanted Garden (winner of the Gosforth Park Fillies Guineas (Gr.1), S.A. Oaks, Sun International (Gr.1), Natal Oaks and John Skeaping Trophy etc.); Lady Brompton (winner of the Spring Challenge (Gr.1), Jacaranda (Gr.3) and Empress Club Stakes); La Fabulous (winner of the J&B Met (Gr.1), Premium Stakes etc); Bold Thatch (winner of the Gilbey's (Gr.1); Eldoriza (winner of the Drill Hall Stakes twice, the Clairwood Park Challenge etc.) to name but a few.

Milkwood Stud is home to a band of approximately20 select broodmares and their progeny. The mares have all been carefully chosen on a performance, conformation, and pedigree construction basis. There is naturally some luck involved whereby the one eyed, one time winning filly "Blue Loerie" (Elliodor x Blue Glide) became the founder of the "Fairy Dynasty". She produced a filly "Tarn Fairy" (by Waterville Lake) who was not accepted on the strength of her pedigree, for any sale. She was retained and raced by Ian and Nina. She won them 7 races and was never out of the first two places in her first 9 starts. Among her victories were the Chairman's Cup Listed), the Strelitzia Stakes (Gr. 3) and J.B. McIntosh Fillies Classic(Gr.2), she was beaten a short head in the Alan Robertson Fillies (Gr.1). Tarn Fairy's first foal by Jallad named Blushing Fairy now an early 3 year old, is the winner of 7 races including the Dahlia Stakes (Listed), Lady Slipper Stakes (Listed), and the Champion Juvenile Cup (Listed). She was touched off for 1st place in the Odessa Fillies Championship (Gr.2). Incidentally this filly was also retained by the stud, due to conformation faults. She has a Silvano filly (2004) and is in foal to him again. Her half sister, by Hermitage (IRE) (Storm Bird x Fairy Bridge) goes by the name of Fairyfootprints and is being kept. Blue Loerie's 2 year old filly by Al Mufti, Woodland Fairy won her debut in impressive style and followed up with a win at her next start.

Nina oversees the day to day management of the stud, while Ian is a practicing Pharmacist. Nina is very keen on genetics, however these are not the only considerations when doing mating selections. Temperament, conformation and to some degree, commerciality all play a part. The stud does not stand a sire, but owns several shares in stallions - Al Mufti, Wolfhound, Silvano, Victory Moon, Casey Tibbs, London News, Lecture, Indigo Magic, Camden Park, Qui Danzig and Asaal. return to main page...
