Family 1 : Kenneth MacLeod

INDEX

[119] Henrietta's name appears only in the 1841 census. Intriguingly there is a
parish record from Uig of a `Henny' born to a Malcolm and Ann MacArthur in
1826. Another parish record of 1848 shows a marriage of a Henrietta
MacArthur
to a Donald MacLeod. Further investigation will be required before it
can be
established that these references are indeed to the Henrietta who was at
Cleascro in 1841. There is even a possibility that `Henrietta' and
Euphemia
were one and the same person!

In September 1994 a letter from Mrs Fay Hay of Uig - daughter of Rob
Calum,
and great grand-daughter of Euphemia from Cleascro who had married Kenneth
MacLeod of Gearranan in 1853.

Fay has a detailed knowledge of the many descendants of that marriage and
says
that four of her own grandchildren have inherited the red hair that came
into
the MacLeod line from `Eric Ruadh an Ach' as her great grandmother was
known!

Fay believes that Euphemia and Henrietta would have been one and the same
person and both the Census returns and the entries in Register House
confirm
this:

in the Carloway census of 1861 Kenneth MacLeod's wife was shown as
`Henrietta'

in 1856 a daughter, May, was born and her mother's name was given as
`Euphemia'

in 1858 another daughter was born and her mother's name was given as
`Eric'

the death entry in 1897 for Kenneth MacLeod's widow gave her name as
`Effie'

It would seem to be the familiar story of the registrars being required to
provide an English equivalent of a Gaelic name and writing down whatever
came
to mind.

Euphemia married Kenneth MacLeod of Gearranan. Three of her children
lived at
Cleascro with their uncle Angus. One of them, Margaret, married a
Roderick
MacKenzie who was also from Liurbost. One of Margaret's daughters,
Effie, was
married in Argyll and died at Lochgilphead in 1971. Effy's sons are
Norman and
Roderick MacDonald.
