We are in the beautiful city of Pretoria in the country of South Africa. Pretoria, the administrative capital, is situated in the Gauteng Province ("City of Gold") about 60km N of Johannesburg, at an altitude of 1370m. President Mandela's Head Office is in the Union Buildings, built on a hill overlooking our city.
We have 11 "official" languages, with our Anthem written in four of them. Our National emblems are the springbok, protea and blue crane. Our currency is "Rands" and "cents" with 100 cents=R1.
Also known as "Garden City" and "Jacaranda City" because of all the jacaranda trees planted in our main streets, Pretoria has some of South Africa's most magnificent gardens and several architectural landmarks eg. the Union Buildings and theVoortrekker Monument.
Our industries include iron & steel works, railroad workshops, auto assembly plants, and food processing plants.
The city was founded in 1855 by Marthinus Wessel Pretorius, and now has a population of more than 1 million. The average rainfall is 700mm per annum, with summer temperatures from 15-35°C, and winter temps 1-23°C.
The Dalviera Girl Guide Company was founded in 1932 by Winnifred Bamber, but
was put on 'ice' during the late 1930's while she was on active war
service. It was revived again in 1946 by Kathy Foster, who ran it until 1965 when,
after another 3 ladies, our present Guider, Margaret Kieser took over (1991).
