FINALLY RUNNING TRAINS

EMD SD7 B&O 1829, an Atlas model by Kato.

With the layout finally in a more or less presentable state, it's time to run some trains on it for a change.

My Chessie System is a freight only railroad, so you'll find no passenger trains on it to disrupt freight operations. Since cabooses are still in use here on the Cape Town division of the Chessie, the few people who need to go somewhere by train can hitch a ride in a caboose. As usual, the big station down at Plainsville is rather busy at the moment, with hardly a line that's unoccupied. I discovered this previously owned footbridge at my local hobby shop one day and was delighted to find that it fits exactly on the platforms that were put down back when the layout was originally started back in 1993.

SD40 C&O 7557 leads its train into the passing siding on the hill where its sister loco, C&O 7551, has been cooling her heels waiting for the meet.

Here a tanker train led by a GP38 is sitting in the siding on the hill while three locos led by an SD50 are attacking the incline to get a train of cylindrical hoppers to the top.

Early morning, and traffic to and from Hillville starts to pick up.

Early morning sunlight lights up the old ice house and the new chuch in Hillville, while the old church and houses across the street are still in shadow.

A worker is inspecting the huge diesel tanks next to the loco yard around the turntable. Judging by the number of freight cars, containers and trailers parked around the factory behind the tanks, business must be good.

The busiest part of the railroad, ideal for railfanning, is this spot where up to four trains often pass through simultaneously.

The loco yard around the turntable is far from full, so there must be quite a few trains running.

There appears to be not that much happening at the freight depot at Plainsville's second yard, with only one trailer at the loading dock.

That's it for now. Drop in again from time to time, since I will add more as the layout develops. Cheers, I'm off to run some trains.....
