Please note: there are thousands of part time photographers trying to make money from weddings. They offer very low prices. Before you decide to use one of them, please do the following to make sure you will get high quality photographs:
1. Ask to see all photographs of one wedding. Many photographers show only an album of their best photos to try and impress you.
2. Ask the photographer if he/she make use of a separate flash mounted on top of the camera. The on-camera flash does not have the reach needed to take all the required photos.
3. Ask the photographer whether he/she has an extra camera, flash and lenses as backup. You will have no wedding photographs if the equipment fails.

PITFALLS IN CHOOSING A WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER          back to top

For most of us our wedding is a once in a lifetime experience. When it comes to wedding photographs, there are very seldom any second chances. It has to be right first time round. The big question is who to trust with capturing your memories. The following guidelines identify some of the pitfalls:

The friend or family member
Be especially wary of a friend or a family member ‘with a good camera’ who offers to take the photographs. You will save a lot of money, but will you get the photographs you truly want? Remember, the photographs cannot be retaken later. Please remember: A camera does not take a great picture any more than a typewriter writes a great novel. It is the skills of the photographer that ensures excellent photographs.

Use references
The best way to find a good wedding photographer is through references. Speak to newly weds. Contact wedding venues or wedding consultants as they regularly deal with photographers.

Book in time.
Book the photographer at least three months before the wedding and confirm the date and time in writing. Good photographers are booked full for months ahead. Put your wishes on paper Provide a detailed list of shots you would like taken. Let the photographer know if you want your prints to be in colour, black and white, or sepia.

Digital photography
Ask what technology the photographer uses – digital or film. If digital, ask whether the photos will be printed on an inkjet printer. Many modern inkjet printers will produce excellent photos, but only a few will produce prints that will last a lifetime. Practically all dye-based inkjet prints (and also colour laser prints) will start fading after a few months. At this stage in time, only inkjet printers with pigmented inks using special additives (for example Epson’s Ultrachrome inks) will last the same time as traditional photographs. Also find out how many pixels the digital camera produces – if less than 6 mega pixels, the chances are good that you may not get quality enlargements (A4 and larger).

Get a detailed quote
Ask if travel expenses, films and processing are included in the fee. Are there any other expenses you need to know about? How many hours will he be present and how much he charges thereafter. Confirm everything in writing. Remember: Never choose a photographer on price alone. It is better to have a few great shots than many boring or blurred ones!

What if…
Find out if your chosen photographer has at least two cameras, together with two off-camera flashes and a back-up of all major pieces of equipment.

Helping hands
Does the photographer bring along an assistant? And, don’t forget to arrange catering for them at the reception.

HOW TO ENSURE HIGH QUALITY PHOTOGRAPHS        back to top

The following guidelines will greatly increase the probability of getting good photographs:

Make an appointment with the photographer
Discuss the type of photographs you want with the photographer. Show him/her examples of pictures you like. Discuss the location for the formal and wedding couple photographs. Ask him to show you some examples of previous weddings. If you hold a rehearsal at the church, please invite the photographer.

Leave enough time for photographs
One of the biggest problems during a photo session is insufficient time. The photographer needs at least an hour after the ceremony for  the group and wedding couple photographs. The following guidelines might help:

The photographer cannot be held responsible if photographs, which the wedding couple requested, are not taken due to insufficient time.

Selective colouring
If the bride's bouquet contains bright colours, pictures like this are possible:
