WHO WE ARE AND WHAT WE DO

BALCO (Build Adult Learning Co-operative) is a non-profit, non-government organisation involved in the struggle against illiteracy and unemployment.  We have several fully-qualified, experienced facilitators trained to dispense ABET (Adult Basic Education and Training).  That there is a need for their services is demonstrated in the recent statistic that 54% of the present adult population have not competed a general level of education while in the Western Cape (which is our area of operations) there are 1-8 million adults in need of ABET.

We have established Community Learning Centres in various areas in the Western Cape.  Instruction is given in Communication, Numeracy and Literacy Levels I-IV (1-4).  The Learners range in age from 15-70.  In many cases our Learners’ Centres represent the first contact the learners have with formal education.  Cases have been reported of 60-70 year old people being ecstatic over their new-found ability to sign their pension cheques, to say nothing of their pride in dealing more confidently with and winning the respect of clerks and officials.
